Photo by the Author A recent report indicates that the Hindman Transportation Co. bulk carrier RUTH HINDMAN (ii) a) NORWAY has been sold to Marine Salvage for scrap. Buflt at Toledo in 1910, she was the last coal-burning freighter in the Canadian lakes fleet. Due to the lack of coal bunk- ering facilities below Lake Erie the operation of the old steamer in the company's Seaway bulk trade was not economical. Her last cargo proved to be a load of storage grain brought to Owen Sound late in 1974. RUTH HINDMAN is apparently going to be towed to Thunder Bay for scrapping. Measuring 524 x 58 x 30, she had a capacity of about 10,700 tons deadweight. This carrier is shown below Lock Two of the Welland Canal on June 26, 1973. She had just loaded cement at Clarkson, Ont., and was bound for Superior, Wis. Skip Gillham
