Gaia 112) in 1896. ‘She was built for the Roby Transportation Co., of Detroit (L.C.Waldo, mgr. ) The price tag was $225,000. In 1905 she was lengthened to 451'5". Nov. 8, 1913, down bound with ore she stranded on Manitou Island, Portage entry. The Eagle Harbor lifesaving station surfmen took the crew off. The after end upper works and cabin washed ashore at Big Bay. The Great Lakes Towing Co. took her off the beach and took her to Lorain, Ohio, for survey. The underwriters sold her "as is - where is" to Mathews Becauahip Co. of Toronto in 1915. She was repaired and renamed RIVERfON (Can. 137898) Mathews sold her in 1934 to Sarnia Steamship Co., of Sarnia, Ont. (Scott Misener, mgr.) Mohawk Navigation Co. of Montreal bought her in 1940. On Nov. 14, 1943 she went-ashore again, this time on Hard Head Point, Hope Island. She was refloated and taken to Pene- tang, pumped out, and unloaded at Midland, Ont. ‘She was moved to Collingwood, repaired and renamed MOHAWK DEER. In 1946 she was re- powered at 3t. Catharines with an engine from a surplus corvette. Beaconsfield S.S. Co. of Montreal bought her in the mid 1940s and operated her until she was sold for scrap. she departed Lauzon in tow of the tug JUNAK, bound for the shipbreakers at La Spezia,Italy. On Nov. 6, 1967, she went ashore yet again, this time near Porto Fino in the upper end of the Tyrrenian Sea. Reported salvaged Dec. 31, 1967. She loved the beach to the end.
