cAwaiting the Torch Photo by the Author The Marine Salvage yard at Ramey's Bend in Port Colborne was a forlorn site on May 3. At the left is the HENNEPIN, a) SOCAPA, b) GEORGE G. BARNUM. She had been towed in from Toledo on April 30 by the tug SALVAGE MONARCH. HENNEPIN operated in 1974, spending most of her time on the Toledo-Detroit coal shuttle. She had a number of me- chanical problems and after 70 years of service her steel showed signs of "softening up." It was the latter problem that undoubtedly led to the decision to scrap her on this side of the Atlantic. The TEXACO-BRAVE, a) JOHN IRWIN (i), b) -CYCLO-BRAVE is one of the last steam canallers. She had been built in England in 1929 and had sailed until Nov. 11, 1974. After wintering in Toronto she was towed to the scrapyard on April 8 by the tugs BAGOTVILLE and G.W. ROGERS. The third vessel is the JAQUES GRAVEL. A former World War II LSI, she had been idle at Kingston for over a decade. She arrived at the yard in October 1974, After rumors that she might gain a reprieve, preliminary scrapping operations have begun, Skip Gillham Goooeo BRYCE R.
