ROY M.BATES The founder of our Society passed away late last year at his home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was in the spring of 1944 that Roy Bates and John O'Brien and the late Robert Larson got together and decided that there should be some kind of an organization in Detroit for people who were interested in ships. Later qd in that summer our Society was initiated with 14 charter members. Mr.Bates wrote the first constitutions, and insisted that the word "Historical" be part of the name of our Soci- ty. He served as its third President, 1948- 1949, when a business appointment required his move away from Detroit. Those of us who remember Roy are deeply grateful to him. The ST.LOUIS
