H.H.PORTER, arrived for scrapping at Thunder Bay, Ont. on July 9th. MERLE M. McCURDY has fitted out and is sailing. Columbia Transp. has purchased one salty and will get another to convert them to lakers ala ALGOSEA. Keel plates were laid on August 5th for the 1,000 footer, Hull 716, being built for BoCo at Sturgeon Bay. On August 7th, the wife of the namesake christened the 1,000 ft.bulk freighter JAMES R. BARKER for Pickands Mather & Co. The next day the BARKER's maiden voyage was viewed by crowds on the Detroit and St.Clair riversides.On August 13th the C&O car ferry SPARTAN while navigating in fog struck the south breakwater of Ludington harbor. SPARTAN was withdrawn from service for inspection and sent to Sturgeon Bay for repairs. August 14th and 15th saw members of the Society cruising Lake Michigan on the car ferry BADGER going to Milwaukee and Kewaunee out of Ludington. August 16th saw the arrival of CHRISTIAN RADICH at Detroit, leaving on the 19th for Tole- do, and then going to Cleveland on the 22nd. Tanker MERCURY burned August 17th while being scrapped at Sturgeon Bay. A late note: P.M.'s FRANK ARMSTRONG is now SAMUEL MATHER. Purchased by PH.& D. in 1909 & converted into a package freighter and passenger ship with accommod- ationa for 200. Later used in the automobile trade. Foundered off Sturgaon Bay, 12-3-1924. : LAKEPORT (ex BOSTON), iron package freighter, 1880 Wyandotte by Detroit D.D.Co. for Western Transit Co. After leaving PH & D. was shortened from 263 to 240 ft and used in the sand trade around Buffalo. Scrapped at Buffalo c.1934. LAKEWOOD (ex SYRACUSE), iron package freighter built at Wyandotte by Detroit D.D.Co for Western Transit Co. 267 x 38 x 17. In later years shortened & used in the sand trade around Buffalo & Detroit. Later named were K.V.SCHWARTZ and ALGONAC. Barge at Toledo in recent years. MAJOR (ex JOHN MITCHELL), wooden bulk freighter put in 1889 at W.Bay ~~~City by Wheeler for the Mitchell Fleet. 283 x x 81. Chartered for the season of 1902. Sold Canadian in 1914, en to a barge in 1920 with engines going into GLENCLOVA in 1921. Burned at Midland in 1923. YORK, wooden package freighter built at Buffalo in 1879 by Union DD. Co.for the Erie Railroad Line. 270 x 37 x 16. Foundered on Lake Huron off Thunder Bay, 10-1-1910. (Cont'd., p.3)
