Hull #723. Ed: Photo One of the newest fleets on the Great Lakes is the Soo River Co., operated by Westdale Shipping, Ltd., and owned by the Pierson Holdings of Port Colborne, Ont. Late in 1974 the first ship, the SILVER BAY, was purchased from the Kinsman fleet and taken to Toronto, where she was refurbished and renamed JUDITH M. PIERSON. In late 1975 a second vessel was acquired from the Interlake Steamship Company, the CHARLES M. SCHWAB, the first converted, lengthened vessel to pass from American to Canadian ownership, and the largest ever in such a transaction. At the end of the 1975 season, three more vessels were purchased from American owners and a new fleet was born. The latest rumors have the Pierson Holdings, Ltd., looking for more ships. We wish them "God Speed and Good Sailing" in the new venture. The ships are painted black with white cabins and forecastle. The stacks are similar to the US Steel fleet with the exception that a large black shamrock adorns the stack just below the black upper band. So far, only the PIERSON DAUGHTERS has a distinctive marking on the black hull, a white band directly underneath the white forecastle. GEORGE G. HENDERSON. ..C.370161...1909 Great Lakes Eng'r'g.Wks.
