LOG The keel was laid for the 1,000 foot Bethlehem boat at the Bay Shipbuilding Company at Sturgeon Bay on October 8th. * The tanker TEXACO WARRIOR on her first trip into the upper Lakes hit the Grand Trunk Ry. dock at Port Huron on Oct. 20th, wrecking it. The ship was turning around after leaving the Imperial Oil dock at Sarnia to go downstream to load gas and furnace oil at the Sun Oil dock when the accident occurred. The railroad dock is being repaired. The vessel suffered no great damage. * The new $4 million research vessel ENDEAVOR, built by Peterson Builders of Sturgeon Bay for the University of Rhode Island, was accepted by the university after her sea trials on Tuesday, Oct.26. The 177 foot vessel has a 972 ton displacement and will be engaged in scientific research. She left for the East Coast on Oct.28. * Peterson Builders launched the 144 foot tug JAMIE A. BAXTER on Nov.17. The tug will be delivered to C.F. Industries, headquartered in Chicago, next spring. It has a 45 foot beam and will fit into the stern of a 570 foot oil barge. Six decks will be added before delivery and the tug, having 7,200 horsepower will carry a 12-man crew. * Hyman-Michaels of Duluth have purchased the WILLIAM J. FIL- BERT and the HENRY PHIPPS from U.S. Steel and will begin scrapping them after the GEORGE G. CRAWFORD has been disposed of. * The ERINDALE is laid up in Hamilton, Ontario because of repeated engine problems. She will be repaired during the winter and will hopefully be ready next spring. * The tug C.WEST PETE towed the drilling barges TELESIS(formerly CONISCLIFFE HALL) and TIMESAVER II into Port Colborne in the first part of October for winter lay-up. They expect to resume the drilling sea- son about May 1, 1977. * The Mc Namara Marine barge C.S.BAND(see DMH, Oct.,'76) was towed into Toronto harbour on Oct.20. She is being scrapped there. * The Erie Sand Steamship Co. has purchased the bulk carrier ATLAS TRAVELER to serve as a replace- ment for PEERLESS. Mc Carthy operated both this fleet and the Automotive Trade S.S. Company. The two fleets started operations about 1936. The last year of operation was 1963. The company owned four auto carriers and five bulk carriers. In addition, the MATAAFA was owned by a subsidiary company and chartered to the parent.
