In early 1976 the Canada Steamship Lines purchased the GAUCHO TAURA, a Liberian vessel for trade in the iron ore and grain business. This vessel had made several trips into the Lakes through the Seaway, the latest in late 1975. She was ori- ginally the SKAUSTRAND built in 1961 by the Mitsubishi Zosen yard at Nagasaki, Japan, hull no. 1539 for Norwegian owners. Originally 563.1 x 75.3 x 41.5, 15894 g.t., the vessel is now registered at 637 feet overall, 75 foot beam, and 42 foot draft. Her gross tonnage is 17,943 and she is registered C. #370514. The first cargo she carried for CSL was iron ore from Pointe Noire, Quebec to Hamilton, Ontario. The above photo was taken in July, 1976 in the St. Mary's River. Welcome to the new ST. LAWRENCE.
