Morris LOG Hull no. 211 was launched at Collingwood on Friday, Oct.29th, 1976 at 11:45 a.m. Approximately the same size and type as the McGIFFIN, Hull 211 was launched for Algoma Central Ry. * The ALGOSEA and CANADIAN OLYMPIC have entered service. * The hull of the old steamer S.M.DOUGLAS is now being used as a breakwater at Brockville, Ontario. * The late season of navigation and the advent of early cold and ice on the Lakes has thwarted shipping with a series of groundings. The JOHN SHERWIN was aground on a reef off Escanaba in late November. The CLIFFS VICTORY at the West Neebish chan- nel of the St. Mary's River on December 9th caused the largest blockage of ships in over 50 years. * The salty ATTICA has a 17 foot crack in her hull and was held up at St.Clair, Michigan '"...while divers drilled a hole at the end of the crack to limit the damage, much like a woman putting a dab of nail polish on a run in her hosiery!" She was not expected to make the deadline for the closing of the Seaway. * The bow section of the 1000 footer BELLE RIVER was fitted to the stern section in the newly completed drydock at Bayship, Sturgeon Bay, in late November. * The STEWART J. CORT passed down the St.Clair River on her way to Erie, Pa. for layup on Dec. 18th, after being stuck across the entrance to the Soo Locks earlier by ice. * The U.S.C.G.C.AC- ACIA, and the tugs JOHN ROEN V and JOHN PURVES have been kept busy with the many (Gontds: P34) THE FOREST CITY STEAMSHIP COMPANY During the 1920's, from 1923 to 1927, this company was organized by a group of Cleveland shippingmen. Six vessels were purchased from various fleets and operated in the coal, iron ore and grain trade. Due to a lack of cargoes, the ships were all disposed of in 1927. The vessels were painted a dark ore-red hull with white cabins and an all black stack. Most of the ships had a narrow white forecastle.
