LOG By now as we have shivered through one of the worst winters of this century, all Winter Navigation has ceased except the few tank barge-tug combinations that still try to travel up the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers and the Toledo-Detroit coal run of the Ford Motor Co. * Hall Corp. is expected to sign a contract soon with Davie SB, Ltd. to lengthen 3 foreign-built ships for Great Lakes use. * Bay Ship- building has received a contract from Oglebay-Norton Co. of Cleveland for construc- tion of a 630 foot self-unloading bulk carrier which is scheduled for delivery in late 1979. A second vessel of larger dimensions and capacity to be delivered in 1981 is an option. * The tanker IMPERIAL ST. CLAIR ran aground off Parry Sound and spilled some of its cargo into Georgian Bay. It was later refloated and sent to Toledo for repairs. * On January 10th the tanker CHESTER A. POLLING broke in two and sank off the Massachusetts coast. She is the former PLATTSBURGH SOCONY and MOBIL ALBANY that sailed into the Lakes frequently in the late 30's, 40's and 50's. * An- other tanker has been built, this one in Japan for Texaco Canada, Ltd. for service on the Lakes, St. Lawrence River and the East Coast.
