These were: Francis H. Clergue; International Transit Company; Lake Superior Corporation; Lake Superior Pulp and Paper Company; Sault Shipping Co.; Algoma Steel Corporation; Algoma Central Steamship Line; and Algoma Central & Hudson's Bay Railroad. We will not tend to diff- erentiate between these near-relative companies but list the ships as they were pur- chased or built. 1896 - Bought two ships: PHILADELPHIA,... wood tug built in 1869 at Dunnville, Ontario by George Hardison as the JESSIE, C.103694. 90 x 18 x 10, 115 g.t. Rebuilt in 1896 to 90 x 19x 14.8, 148 g.t. and renamed PHILADELPHIA. Sold to U.S. parties, US. 12713, wrecked at Gros Cap, Ontario on Lake Superior, October 3, 1907. J.S. AUSTIN,...wood schooner built in 1863 at Port Ryerse, Ontario by Ryerse, C.968- 20. 136 x 26 x 10, 300 g.t. Abandoned c. 1911. Used as a barge. 1900 - Bought four ships: LEAFIELD,....steel canaller built in 1892 at Sunderland, England, BR.97990, by Strand Stepway Co., Wood & Skinner, 249 x 35 x 16, 1454 g.t. Foundered on Lake Superior November 9, 1913 during the Big Storm. Probably sank near Angus Island. MONKSHAVEN,...steel canaller built in 1882 at South Shield, England by J. Redhead & Sons, BR.131333. 249 x 36 x 17.6, 2097 g.t. Stranded on Pie Island, Lake Superior off Isle Royale November 28, 1905. Apparently salvaged. Reported wrecked at St. Felicite, Quebec, August 23, 1914. PALIKI,....steel canaller built in 1889 at Sunderland, England by J. Blumer & Co. hull #98, BR.109701. 240 x 36 x 17.1, 1578 g.t.
