CORT, PRESQUE ISLE |. the loc ee | and MESABI MINER and the 858-foot ROGER BLOUGH transitted the Poe Lock. * The Cana- dian lock at the Soo will be permanently { closed at the conclusion of the 1982 sea- son. The Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Authority cites the 82-year-old lock as being too shallow and narrow 'to be of great commercial value.' * Columbia's W. C. RICH- ARDSON a.) WAINWRIGHT, long idle at Cleveland has been moved to Toledo primarily for her deck-mounted cranes. * Davie Shipbuilding, Lauzon launched the bow section for CARTIERCLIFFE HALL a.) The first involves Fraser Shipyards, Superior, which has an order for a 600-foot cement carrier. The second unit, a 'river-class' 630-footer, is said to be on Bay Shipbuilding's docket at Sturgeon Bay for U.S. Steel's Bradley fleet. * The ore miners' strike has substantially reduced the num- ber of American-flag carriers in service. As of September lst, only 11 of the 22 units of U.S. Steel's fleet were in commission with the four largest boats (BLOUGH, ANDERSON, CALLAWAY and CLARKE) due for layup sometime during September. The fleet's four 'Supers' (FAIRLESS, FERBERT, FRASER and VOORHEES) have been in the Seaway trade carrying wheat east, and ore west. The fifth 'Super' (OLDS) is laid up at Lor- ain following bottom repairs needed after her grounding at the Soo in June. The six remaining coal-burning steamers which fitted out for the fleet this season (AFFLECK, HATFIELD, HULST, IRVIN, JOHNSON and LINDABURY) have been given complete layup and will not resume service this year. A late unconfirmed report has RICHARD V. LINDA- BURY sold to Kinsman. The 'Tin-stacker' THOMAS W.
