v BILLBOARDS OF THE GREAT LAKES by Rev. Peter J. Van der Linden Advertising has been popular for many years and advertising on lake ships has kept pace. There are many companies who advertise their firms on the broad sides of the long freighters, but we will discuss those next month. Have you noticed any vessels that actually advertise their own names recently? They did at one time, and in the not-so-distant past. In those days, a boat watcher did not need binoculars to read names because they were quite visible painted on the ships sides in hugh block let- ters. Perhaps the last of these were the Boland and Cornelius vessels which finally lost their peculiar signatures only a few years ago. But then again these vessels were advertising the BoCo customers: THUNDER BAY QUARRIES, DOW CHEMICAL, DIAMOND ALKALI, CONSUMERS POWER, NIAGARA MOHAWK, and UNITED STATES GYPSUM. Do you remember the Playfair canallers, the Glen Line Steamships: GLENBUCKIE, GLENBURNIE, GLENCALVIE, GLENCASSIE, GLENCORRIE, GLENGELDI, GLENLINNIE, GLENLOCHIE, GLENORVIE, GLENLEDI and -- the latter with her name painted on her sides her first year of operation? Then too, the Quebec and Ontario Paper Company had two boats, the THOROLD (a) and CHICAGO TRIBUNE @); with this easy identification. There were some others that carried their own names on their sides, including the small Carter-Wood canallers CHEMONG and DRUMAHOE which later were in the Misener fleet. Here then are some photos of the Billboards of the Great Lakes. Can you let us know of any others?
