The Ships GEORGE HINDMAN (Continued) The second of our series on the various ships which have borne the same name is about the ships GEORGE HINDMAN. As a tribute to a great sailor and vessel operator, four steamers -- two canallers and two upper lakers -- have carried his name, with one continuing the tradition to this day. Captain George Hindman was born at Hepworth, Ontario on July 7, 1888. His family moved to Owen Sound, Ontario the following year. He began sailing in 1904 and by 1911 was a mate on the steam tug KEENAN, where he met and married Edith Blanche Proctor, the daughter of another officer. The young couple moved to Sarnia to work for the Reid Towing & Wrecking Co., but returned to Owen Sound in 1919 for the balance of their lives. In 1922 Captain Hindman bought property on Manitoulin Island and formed the Hindman Timber Co., Ltd. Later developments caused the Captain to form his first fleet, the Lakehead Transportation Co., Ltd., in 1936. Captain Hindman operated this fleet and was the guiding influence in subsequent Hindman Transportation Companies -- including one fleet sold in its entirety to Reoch in the early 1950's —- until his death in Florida on February 27, 1969. It is especially appropriate that we carry this feature now, because the Hindman colors are again disappearing from the lakes scene as the units of the fleet are repainted in the colors of their new owner, The Quebec & Ontario Transportation Co., Ltd. The present GEORGE HINDMAN, however, will continue in tribute to this well- remembered independent vessel owner and operator. GEORGE HINDMAN (4) Editor's Photo Steel bulk freighter (C. 190493) built as a) COVERDALE in 1949 by the Midland Shipyards, Ltd., Midland, Ontario (Hull #34): 623.2 x 67.2 x 30.4; 11,997 gross tons. Renamed b) GEORGE HINDMAN (4) in 1973. In Service.
