ADDIRIYAH Editor's Photo The Log (Continued) The world's first ice-breaking cargo vessel, the ARCTIC, was christened at Port Weller Dry Docks on June 2nd. The 687-foot motorvessel is owned by a consortium consisting of the Canadian government (51% ownership), Canada Steamship Lines, Federal Commerce and Navigation, Ltd., and Upper Lakes Shipping, Ltd. While the vessel was being towed down the Maumee River by two tugs on June 13th, she struck Toledo's Cherry Street Bridge, damaging her port bow. The new carrier had loaded corn for European delivery. Repairs were undertaken in the Welland Canal below Lock 1. ** The THORNHILL, towed to Toronto last Fall for use as a storage grain hull, has been returned to the scrapyard at Hamilton. ** Peterson Builders, Sturgeon Bay, is completing four minesweepers for the U.S. Navy. The first of the group, the ADDIRIYAH, passed downbound at Port Huron on June 21st on her delivery voyage to Norfolk under the command of fellow member Capt. G. R. Gislason. The 154-footer will be turned over to Saudi Arabia. (see photo above). Additions & Corrections The official number for the STEELCLIFFE HALL, featured in our last issue, is C. 383573 and the correct gross tonnage is 18,517. One of the proposed routes for the SUNSHINE COAST QUEEN is from Detour to Manitoulin Island, not from Detroit.
