The wooden steamer INDIANA, built at Vermilion, Ohio in 1848, foundered off Crisp Point in southeast Lake Superior in 1858 while downbound with iron ore loaded at Marquette. She was found by skin divers in 200 feet of water in 1975. The salvage of her engine, boiler, Ericcson propeller, rudder and allied parts was undertaken by a team of divers William J. Luke, Editor in early August using the Corps of Engineers' barge COLEMAN. Her power plant is the oldest known unit on the Great Lakes and is destined for display in the Smithsonian's Museum of History and Technology in Washington two year hence. The salvaged treasure arrived at the Soo on August 8th where the artifacts were chemically treated and wrapped for the flatbed trailer trip to the Capitol.
