Launched as SIR ISAAC LOTHIAN BELL. During the hey-day of building steel barges to act as consorts to powerful steamers at the close of the 19th century, the SIR ISAAC LOTHIAN BELL was built for the Bessemer Fleet, in which she served avery short time. In 1901 this group was absorbed in the forming of the United States Steel fleet known as the Pittsburgh Steamship Company. Originally the vessels of this fleet had dark green hull colors with white cabins but this scheme was abandoned a few years later and all vessels were painted in the familiar ore-red shade.
