An Editorial Did you like the book the Society published in 1979, Great Lakes Ships We Remember? They are still available from Freshwater Press, 334 The Arcade, Cleveland, Ohio 44114. If you write them, you will be able to purchase a copy for $29.50 plus $1.48 shipping. We have undertaken the task (a big one) to begin a sequel, a second volume entitled Great Lakes Ships We Remember II, but we need your help. We have approximately 250 entirely different ships we would like to cover, including the ever popular SOUTH AMERICAN, and many others not in the first volume. We are in need of a few facts, however, that would help us complete the research of several vessels. Mr. Ed Middleton of Kansas City suggested we advertise to you the members so that many gaps could be filled. In the next few issues we will name the ships and what we would like from you. We must have specific sources, not just the "I remember when..." Please quote news- paper articles, books, reference volumes, advertising, etc. with dates of publication, and provide copies, if possible. We want to be as exact as possible, eliminating even the few mistakes we made in the first volume. The following vessels require addi- tional information at this time: MENOMINEE (Goodrich steamer - we do not have much.) ERIE L. HACKLEY (A small converted fish tug, passenger vessel. between 1896 and 1902? Who owned her? etc., etc.) CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS (i) (Anything at all on this one.) COLUMBIA (Built in 1892 at Grand Haven, Michigan - owners, routes, etc.) BADGER STATE (Package freighter - When was she converted into a bulk lumber carrier and where?) MONKSHAVEN (Her hull number and launch date.) RICHELIEU (Yes, the CSL passenger steamer - which tug towed her overseas for scrap?) ROSEDALE (Owners and dates of ownership.) VERNON (US. 161557) (Engine dimensions and builder of engine.) HENRY R. PLATT JR. (i) (ex OTTO M. REISS (i) (Where was she scrapped in 1967?) USS DUBUQUE (The former Naval Reserve training vessel which went to war in 1940. Where did she go, or what happened to her after her career in the Navy?) Where did she run ww Editor's Photo HARRY L.
