After many years of carrying ore, grain, coal and autos for Cliffs, LA SALLE was sold to Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd. in 1966 and renamed MEAFORD (3). She hauled many cargoes for these owners as well, and was a regular visitor to Goderich, Ontario until once again she was sold -- this time (in 1979) to Robert Pierson's Soo River Company who renamed her PIERSON INDEPENDENT. Her career with this line was short lived. On October 28, 1979, after touching bottom in the St. Lawrence near Cornwall Island, she took on water and was purposely beached near Brockville. After being lightered, towed to repair and sent on her way, the INDEPENDENT's troubles were not yet over, for her corn cargo had begun to smolder from water that had leaked into her holds. She was taken to Three Rivers, unloaded and sailed under her own power to the Port Weller drydock where it was determined that she was damaged beyond economical repair. After being towed to Hamilton, she was sold later for overseas scrapping and arrived at Santander, Spain on June 11, 1980 under the name COMPANY -- the only word that had not been painted out on her hull... a sad ending to the life of a classic ship.
