Keel laying ceremonies were held at Toledo on July 12, 1979. The christening was held at Lorain on April 25, 1981. The Great Lakes' longest carrier entered service on May 10, 1981, loaded 55,944 gross tons of pellets at Silver Bay on May 12-13, and arrived back at Lorain on May 16.
