R TUXPANCLIFFE at New Orleans Photo by Atlantis Maritime Press ---Former BLACK RIVER is still in service! Tug JASON SMITH assisting.--- As we assumed with the takeover of the Soo River Company fleet by Parrish and Heimbecker, all nine vessels of the group have been renamed, as follows: BEECHGLEN - PIERSON DAUGHTERS, BIRCHGLEN - JOAN M. MCCULLOUGH, CEDARGLEN - E. J. NEWBERRY, ELMGLEN - HOWARD F. ANDREWS, FERNGLEN - JUDITH M. PIERSON, Bill Luke, Editor OAKGLEN - J. F. VAUGHAN, PINEGLEN - SOO RIVER TRADER, SPRUCEGLEN - ROBERT S. PIERSON, WILLOGLEN - JOSEPH X. ROBERT. By October 1st, seven units of the new operation were reported in service, with PINEGLEN being unloaded of her storage grain cargo at Midland and said to be headed for continued sailings this Fall. FERNGLEN may be retired for soya bean storage use at Hamilton. All units have been stripped of their former owner's letterings on the bows and hulls and stack shamrock ensignia. ** Algoma Central Marine's ALGOSEA has been renamed SAUNIERE', presumably in connection with her long- term charter in the Gulf of St. Lawrence salt trade. ** HULL 258, under construction at Govan, Scotland for Pioneer Shipping, Ltd., will be christened SASKATCHEWAN PIONEER for Great Lakes service beginning next Fall under Misener management. Gaelic Tugboat Company's recently rebuilt tug BANTRY BAY was put through successful river trials at Detroit on October 4th. She is the former Galveston-based tug PROPELLER. ** The lighter T. F. NEWMAN was seen anchored off the Canadian Soo in late September. Originally a unit of the Great Lakes Towing salvage operation, she was later owned by McQueen Marine of Amherstburg. Her most recent owner has been McAllister Towing and Salvage Ltd. of Montreal. ** McKeil Work Boats, Ltd., of Hamilton has reacquired the tug CANADIAN FRANKO and renamed her GLENLIVET II, her former name. ** Ford Motor Company's motorship BENSON FORD has been stripped at the Rouge. Her sale to the breakers seems imminent. Meanwhile, Ford's steamer WILLIAM CLAY FORD is said to be slated for cargo hold renewal at Bay Shipbuilding's Sturgeon Bay yard. ** Contract terms and other difficulties between the. Upper Peninsula Shipbuilding Company of Ontonagan and the Michigan Department of Trans- portation caused that plant's closing in early July. Hulls of the uncompleted tug and barges, intended for the controversial Lake Michigan rail ferry service, remain at the yard. ** C&O's steam ferry BADGER constituted Lake Michigan's only auto ferry service this past Summer, with her operation said to be slated for termination at the end of March. She is operating between Ludington and Kewaunee. C&0's CITY OF MIDLAND 41 and SPARTAN are moored at Ludington with other units of the Lake Michigan carferry fleet laid up at Muskegon and Frankfort. ** The Straits of Mackinac is void of railferry service as the steamer CHIEF WAWATAM remains in ordinary at the Carbide Dock at the American Soo, prompted by Michigan's financial doldrums. ** The sixth annual Whistle-Toot was held at the River Crab restaurant above St. Clair on Labor Day. "Best of Show" award this year went to our new member Harry Barry of Ripley, New York for his handsomely-restored whistle from ASSINIBOIA. (Continued on Page 6) kK at Rie
