the HUMPHREY's deck was six feet above water. The forward end of the wreck was then tilted in order to timber patch the 18 by 20 foot hole in the steamer's side abreast No. 3 hatch. Beginning Friday, September 8, the water was pumped out of the hull and on Sunday, September 10, the GEORGE M. HUMPHREY was once more afloat after having spent almost 15 months submerged in the Straits of Mackinac. g Partly under her own steam she was first taken to Sturgeon Bay and then to the shipyard at Manitowoc for sight and survey. The HUMPHREY is again in the Roen shipyard at Sturgeon Bay where a large force of men is being employed to place her in serviceable condition, probably in time for the opening of the 1945 navi- gation season. RRKKREEK The HUMPHREY undergoes repairs at Sturgeon Bay -- note the new name, CAPTAIN JOHN ROEN, on the stern. ri The HUMPHREY resumes service in 1945 as the CAPTAIN JOHN ROEN, managed by Hutchinson & Co., Cleveland. ee
