The Log (Continued) The straight-decker, building for CSL, has been designated a "Sulker," a vessel whose initial construction lends itself to relatively easy later conversion to the self-unloader trade. The boat's hull already has a loop-belt casing, stiffened house front for boom carriage, boom supports in the deck and double bottom stiffeners. Her interesting dimensions are 736' 64" OA X 75' 104" X 46! 6" with propulsion to be handled through a 6-cylinder Sulzer diesel developing 11,100 brake hp @ 124 rpm direct drive. Her launch date has been scheduled for July 14th. No name has yet been announced for the vessel. ** In other new-construction news, Upper Lakes' 730-foot CANADIAN AMBASSADOR is undergoing completion at the Port Weller yard above Lock 1 on the Welland Canal. Her configuration approximates that of the earlier-completed CANADIAN PIONEER, delivered for Upper Lakes by that yard late in 1981. ** Operations of the Cleveland-Cliffs' fleet in the young 1983 season were marred by difficulties besetting its big steamer WALTER A. STERLING which struck a submerged object below the Rock Cut off Neebish Island on her initial down-bound trip from Marquette on April 6th. Purposely grounded with substantial bow damage, the STERLING was subsequently self-lightered into Ford's motorship HENRY FORD II and released on the 7th, proceeding to Huron, Ohio, for complete cargo discharge prior to drydocking and repair at American Ship Building's Lorain, Ohio, yard. Her return to service is now scheduled for mid-May, her place in the fleet hurriedly filled by Cliff's CLIPPER Navy Pier, Chicago “6S steamer EDWARD 8B. GREENE, which departed her Toledo layup berth on April 13th, some weeks earlier than planned. The GREENE suffered an engine breakdown in Whitefish Bay on April 18th, repairs made with parts off Boco's idle steamer ADAM E. CORNELIUS. ** The former Canadian East Coast carferry ABEGWEIT was upbound in the Welland Canal on April 10th and 11th under her own power enroute to Chicago where she will serve as ABBY, the new clubhouse for the Columbia Yacht Club there. ** The saltie PRESIDENT HARRISON was due in the Welland Canal on April 22nd with the Sturgeon Bay-based tugs JOHN M. SELVICK and MINNIE SELVICK enroute to her conversion by Bay Shipbuilding. ** CSL's newly-reconverted steamer WHITEFISH BAY was downbound at Detroit on April 21st on her initial trip following removal of her self-unloading equipment at Collingwood. The 730-footer was built by Davie at Lauzon, Quebec in 1961 as WHITEFISH BAY, renamed QUETICO in 1969 when she was converted for the self-unloader trade by Port Arthur Shipbuilding, Thunder Bay. Her enclosed Pilothouse wing bridges, added in the 1969 rebuild, have been retained. ** The three storage barges at Goderich have been sold for scrapping to Western Metals at Thunder Bay. The R. G. SANDERSON was towed upbound at the Soo on April 24th. The LIONEL PARSONS and D. B. WELDON will follow shortly. ** The stern half of the JOHN B. AIRD was towed upbound at the Soo earlier this month to be joined to the new bow section at Thunder Bay. ** FORT WILLIAM has been renamed b) STEPHEN B. ROMAN. e
