Pete Vander Linden Thanks to our member, Jack Messmer of Lancaster, New York, we have additional information on the barge ALMEDA: the vessel was wrecked near Leamington, Ontario, Lake Erie on May 22, 1880. In tow of the steamer ALPENA, the ALMEDA and JOSEPH were downbound with lumber when a gale forced the vessels to anchor near Pt. Pelee. The JOSEPH became waterlogged but the ALMEDA's stern broke off before she went ashore. Her crew was rescued by the barge BANNER and within a day or so ALMEDA went to pieces. The JOSEPH was safely towed to Detroit by the ALPENA To continue with the fleet vessels: ll. CITY OF TAWAS (US 4391) wood schooner built in 1864 at Vicksburg (Marysville), MI, by Thomas Arnold: 135.6 x 28.6 x 10.6; 372 gross tons. In the fleet in 1877. Wrecked at St. Joseph, MI, Lake Michigan, October 31, 1877. 12. COSSACK (US 4931) wood schooner built in 1867 at Oswego, NY by J. Navaugh; 137.4 x 25.5 x 11.3; 318 gross tons. In the fleet from 1880-1881. Stranded at Cleveland, December 7, 1881. Document surrendered 12-30-81, "Vessel lost". 13. CREVOLA (No registry number) wood schooner built in 1848 at Milan, Ohio (shipbuilder unknown); 107.8 x 23.10 x 9.1; 212 gross tons. In the fleet 1859-1860. Wrecked at Port Stanley, Ontario, Lake Erie, October 26, 1863. Data wanted. 14. CRUSADER (US 125252) wood tug built in 1874 at Port Huron by Frank Leighton: 123.3 x 22.9 x 8.8; 198 gross tons. In the fleet 1892- 1894. Burned at the Soo on November 6, 1894. Two lives were lost in this accident. Photo needed. COSSACK - HENRY W. HOAG and others at Oswego (lower right) Fr. Dowling Collection 15. DEPERE (US 6849) wood passenger propellor built in 1873 at Manitowoc by Rand & Burger: 165.0 x 29.0 x 10.0; 736 gross tons. In the fleet 1891-1897. Renamed b) STATE OF MICHIGAN in 1892. Foundered between Muskegon and Montague, Lake Michigan, the night of October 18-19, 1901. The connecting rod of the engine broke and went through her bottom. The crew was rescued by the U.S. Life Saving Service. 16. DISPATCH (C 33249) wood tug built in 1856 at St. Antoine de Tilly, Quebec by Beaudry: 101.0 x 20.4 x 8.6; 103 gross tons. In the fleet 1866-1869. Grummond traded the CREVOLA to Dawson of Sarnia as part payment for the tug DISPATCH. (U.S. 6155). Ashore at Port Austin Reef, Lake Huron October 10, 1871 and went to _ pieces ed ~ October 14, 1871.
