The GRUMMOND FLEETS . . . Revisited There may be more to add to the Stephen B. Grummond fleet list. Here are the newest additions, thanks to Dr. Richard J. Wright and Jack Mesmer: WATERLOO (US none) wood schooner built in 1834 at Swan Creek, Michigan by Benjamin Courchaine (Courdelaine): 66.3 x 23.3 x 5.63 63 gross tons. In Grummond fleet 1843-1844 (probably his first). Foundered in a gale on Lake Erie November 19, 1846. All hands (4) lost. SAMUEL J. CHRISTIAN (US 23821) wood tug built in 1868 at Kaighn's Point, N.J. by (builder unknown); 70.6 x 17.2 x 7.2; 55 gross tons. In Grummond fleet 1888. Further details unknown. BLAZING STAR (US 2868) wood schooner built in 1873 at Manitowoc by J. Richards. 137 x 26 x 10; 279 gross tons. Bought as a wreck on Fisherman's Shoal, Lake Michigan by Grummond in 1888, April. Tug LEVIATHAN sent to strip her. Abandoned in June of 1888. GRANADA (US 10543) wood schooner built in 1856 at Buffalo by (shipbuilder unknown) 122.6 x 26.2 x 10.7; 311 gross tons. In Grummond fleet 1875. Enrollment surrendered at Grand Haven September 9, 1881 and endorsed "Vessel wrecked". Data wanted. If you have further names of ships owned by Grummond, please let me know. Fr. Pete SS SEGWUN This unique steam vessel, SEGWUN, sailing the Muskoka Lakes, just north of Toronto is in financial trouble. The "Friends of the SEGWUN" hope that you can spend a trip aboard this wonderful vessel this summer if possible. They are offering a group of special sailings aboard the vessel for this summer's season. Here are some of the sailings which we hope you may enjoy: Heritage Cruise ... June 22 and 23, "Friends of the SEGWUN" cruise . . . June 29 and 30; Two day cruises, Monday and Tuesday September 9 and 10 and September 28 and 29; Four-hour cruises every Sunday and Friday from Gravenhurst. This excursion (the day time trip) was taken by your editor in 1983 and proved to be a most enjoyable and refreshing steamboat ride with plenty of scenic views and an extraordinary gracious welcome by most gracious hosts.
