Dues and Log Correspondence 20255 Wellesley Birmingham, MI 48010 Bill Luke, Editor Unhappily, the big news items this season appear to revolve around the number of lake vessels, on both sides of the border, either being laid up for lack of business or being sold to breakers both in this hemisphere and abroad. Upbound at the Soo and under tow on June 16th, the former Parrish and Heirnbecker straight-decker SPRUCEGLEN was taken to Thunder Bay for scrap. She had served a relatively short two-year stint in grain storage service at Goderich. She will be best remembered as Reiss Fleet's REISS BROTHERS and Soo River's ROBERT S. PIERSON. RE The former U. S. flag steamers PONTIAC and JOHNSTOWN were sighted off Sept Iles behind the Polish tug KORAL on May 30th enroute to breakers in Spain. The KORAL has been involved in a number of pulls of former lakers to Europe. She was mentioned in the HISTORIAN's "Log" for February of 1968 as the tug which handled the tow of Misener's first LAKETON to Italian breakers. *** Scrapping of the former Misener steamer GEORGE M. CARL began at San Estaban de Pravia, Spain last September 26th. iadicdia Nipigon Transport's LAKE WINNIPEG will be cut up at Sacavem, Portugal. *** by late May, scrapping of ERINDALE was almost complete at Port Colborne's old Algoma Steel dock. Scrapping was underway on the former passenger vessel ROYAL CLIPPER at Port Maitland, and only a small portion of the stern was remaining at the Dwor yard at Rameys Bend of the former PM steamer E. G. GRACE. *** Desgagnes' 620-foot steamer GOLDEN HIND, idle at Toronto since her acquisition by her new owners in January, 1984, has been repainted in Desgagnes colors, in apparent preparation for eventual service for them. *** Reports LAC STE.
