HUDSON TRANSPORT in tow of GLENEVIS leaving Lock 1, Welland Ship Canal 5-28-85 Pete Worden Photo Steel Tanker built in 1962 at Lauzon by Davie Shipbuilding Company (Hull #629), (C. 314399) 340.1 x 46.1 x 31.1; 4076 gross tons. The LOG (continued) indicate that the hull of the former Upper Lakes steamer RIDGETOWN, (ex U.S. Steel's a)WILLIAM E. COREY) following use as a temporary breakwater at Nanticoke, and at Port Credit as a permanent breakwater in 1969, is showing signs of breaking up. *** The former Canadian icebreaker N.B. MCLEAN was scrapped at Sorel in April of this year. Meanwhile, the 10-month strike at Marine Industries’ Sorel facility appeared to have been settled by late June. *** Some 350 persons attended at the second Great Lakes Live Steam Whistle Blast held at Detroit Edison's Marysville plant on June 22nd. While heavy rain and winds dampened the program's early tooters, sunshine warmed the late afternoon participants. Among the notable whistles brought to the affair by their proud owners were those from ASSINIBOIA, GEORGE M. CARL, JOSEPH H. FRANTZ, WILLIS L. KING, JUDITH M. PIERSON, ONTADOC, SCRANTON and tug GLADIATOR as well as favorites from the earlier (1983) "toot" at Marysville, the NORTH AMERICAN, SOUTH AMERICAN, KALKASKA, BUCKEYE, SIDNEY C. MCLOUTH, SIDNEY E. SMITH, ELIZA STRONG and THOMAS D. STIMSON. Burned December 26, 1981 in The St. Lawrence River off Matane, Quebec. Seven lives lost. Hull laid up. RK The Bob-Lo steamers COLUMBIA and STE. CLAIRE have been dressed out in stack markings of old this season, featuring the black top, blue center band with yellow base coloring; the colors long carried by this pair during their years of operation under Browning direction. *** The new bunkering barge for use at Hamilton and the Welland Canal has been renamed HAMILTON ENERGY by owner Provmar Terminal, a joint venture of CSL and ULS-International. The vessel was built at Grangemouth, Scotland in 1969 as PARTINGTON. She will be used in conjunction with the hull of the former Halco tanker UNGAVA TRANSPORT which is now a storage barge at Hamilton and has been renamed d)PROVMAR TERMINAL. A sister, HUDSON TRANSPORT, arrived at Ramey's Bend May 29 for scrap. *** The resurgence of the three coal-fired, steam-propelled grain carriers of the Kinsman Fleet again this year has been a bright spot on the lakes' scene. In active service in later June were the trio of KINSMAN INDEPENDENT (a)RICHARD V. LINDABURY), MERLE M. MCCURDY (a)WILLIAM B. DICKSON), and WILLIAM A. MCGONAGLE. Along with Ford's ERNEST R. BREECH (only a few trips) and PM's J.L.
