Three other boats have been moved to domestic breakers on the lakes thus far this year to be dismantled here. The latest pair to move east consists of Hanna's LEON FALK, JR., and Carryore's MENIHEK LAKE which departed their River Rouge and Hamilton moorings on August 16th and = 15th respectively. Interestingly, the FALK, earlier equipped with a bow thruster she never used, had been moored at her spot for a period of one day over five years. Two hours prior to FALK's departure, her sistership, Hanna's PAUL H. CARNAHAN, arrived for her permanent layup there. Upper Lakes Shipping's WHEAT KING has been stripped at Toronto, being readied for shipbreakers. Upper Lake's steamer's R. BRUCE ANGUS and GORDON C. LEITCH were reported eastbound off Sept-Iles on July 31st behind the British tug IRVING CEDAR Editor's Photo bound for the sea. Another pair, Algoma's E.B. BARBER and Boco's SAGINAW BAY were sighted at the same location on July 18th. Late reports have Cleveland Cliffs requesting the U.S. Maritime Administration for permission to sell the unique CLIFFS VICTORY to foreign flag for dismantling in Taiwan. Desgagnes' steamer OUTARDE was under tow upbound in the Welland Canal on August 17th, enroute to her scrapping berth at Port Colborne. *** On a brighter note, the following idle lakers may have been saved for museum use at the ports indicated; FORT HENRY at Welland, WILLIS B. BOYER at Toledo and WILLIAM A. IRVIN at Duluth. *** The bunkering barge MARINE FUEL OIL was upbound at the Soo on July 28th enroute to Duluth to replace REISS MARINE, reportedly for sale. *** CSL has reportedly finalized their arrangements for the carriage of U. S. coal from Rotterdam to Portugal. Plans call for the delivery of between 500,000 to 750,000 tons annually, utilizing CSL's motorship ATLANTIC SUPERIOR and possibly their HON.
