The Lesters of Marine City and Curtis and Brainard group of Toledo were the principal owners and backers. The fleet engaged in the lumber trade especially and also in other bulk freight movements. The following _ list, arranged in alphabetical order, names the known ships of the fleet. We suspect there may have been other vessels. Information here will be welcome by your Editor and the author. No photos are available for the following: BUFFALO (U.S. 2655) Wooden barge, formerly propellor, built at Buffalo by Birwell & Banta for American Transportation Co., Buffalo in 1851; 829 gross tons. Reduced to a barge in the late 1870's. Lasted until about 1890. Final disposition data is confused and contridictory. J.R. EDWARDS (U.S. 76393) wooden schooner barge built for the fleet by Lester at Marine City in 1883. 175.2 x 30.6 x 12.2; 435 gross tons. Sold Canadian 1913. In 1914 Canadian registry (C. 141753). Last reported owner was T.R. Enderoy, Montreal. Out of Canadian registry 1934. J.S. ESTABROOK (U.S. 13667) Wooden steam barge built at Marine City in 1867 by David Lester. 145 x 26.3 x 11.6; 280 old tons. Powered by old engines taken from tug DAN P. RHODES of 1855. ESTABROOK was lost when it struck the Breakwater at Fairport Harbor, Ohio on October 19, 1873. However, the machinery was salvaged and put into the GLADYS in 1875. Higgins of Saginaw. Last owner was Joseph KATIE BRAINARD with Steamer OGEMAW at Bay City Editor's Collection KATIE BRAINARD (U.S. 47088), wooden schooner barge, built for the fleet by David Lester at q@ Marine City in 1871. 169.8 x 30 x 10; 412 gross tons. Sold Canadain 1912 (C. 126196). Out of Canadian list in 1938. Last listed owner was Robert Weddell, Trenton, Ontario, Canada. 328
