The last grain ship to depart Thunder Bay was SENNEVILLE, on December 28, with storage grain cargo for Port McNicoll. *** Cargo totals in the Port of Thunder Bay in the past shipping season were 2% ahead of the previous year at 17,617,246 tons. *** Wedtech Corp., the New York contractor that bought and reopened the Ontonagon, Michigan shipyard from the now-defunct Upper Peninsula Shipbuilding Co. in 1984, is currently in the midst of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Several companies are interested in purchasing the facility. Wedtech Corp. already has sold the partially completed tug and barge eystem to Florida-California shipbuilders. Muskegon County, Michigan voters wil be asked March 3 to give the County Commission authorization to levy up to a half-mill property tax increase to help pay for a Lake Michigan car ferry. The proposal calls for the 150-car, 800 passenger ferry VIKING to be renovated and run between May 15 and September 15 beginning in 1988.
