Log Correspondence 42072 Sunnydale Lane Northville, MI 48167 Pete Worden, Editor The 1987 shipping season in the Detroit area opened on March 2 with the arrival from Toledo of American Steamship's AMERICAN MARINER at McLouth Steel with a storage cargo of iron ore pellets. She was assisted to the dock by Gaelic Towings SUSAN HOEY and SHANNON. The vessel departed for Escanaba on March 3 after discharging the cargo. The MARINER required tug assistance in Escanaba during loading to "flush" ice from her bottom. She returned to Detroit on March 9. *** On January 29th, the engine room of the M-WT carferry BADGER was flooded through a broken pipe. The Ludington Fire Department pumped nearly 200,000 gallons of water out of the nearly capsized vessel. *** Keel laying ceremonies were held February 9 at Peterson Builders in Sturgeon Bay for MCM-6, one of five contracts for Mine Countermeasure ships awarded to PBI by the Naval Sea System Command. *** The Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communication announced plans to spend $10 million for a new, larger vessel to replace the PELEE ISLANDER on the Sandusky run to the Canadian mainland. The new ship will be end-loading, about 200 feet in length, and will carry about 400 passengers. The present PELEE ISLANDER, built in 1960 at Erieau, Ontario holds only 268 passengers. The new ship will also carry more cars, commercial vehicles, and be able to accomodate the growing load of agricultural Products to and from the island. The new ferry probably will be the death knell for the small grain elevator on the island and
