1985, J.W. Purvis Marine Ltd. Pete Worden, Editor 42072 Sunnydale Lane Northville, MI 48167 U. S. Steel self-unloader T. W. ROBINSON and their straight-decker A.H. FERBERT have been sold to Marine Salvage Limited of Port Colborne. On April 30, Sandrin Brother's GLENADA left Sarnia for T.W. ROBINSON, which has been laid up in Rogers City since May 23, 1982. She was downbound past Detroit with TUSKER on the bow on May 3 and arrived at Rameys Bend on May 5. The T.W. ROBINSON (US 224836) was built in 1925 as Hull #790 of the American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain; 572.6 x 60.2 x 29.5; 7,726 gross tons. The ROBINSON was the first vessel to introduce turbo-electric propulsion to the Great Lakes. SEWELL, AVERY, in tow of Purvis Marine's AVENGER IV, and the former St. Lawrence Cement Company's barge D.D.S. SALVAGER, in tow of Wellington Towing's IROQUOIS, arrived at the Soo on May 4 with assistance from Wellington Towing's CHIPPEWA and Purvis Marine's W.J. IVAN PURVIS. *** The new logo appearing on the bows of the Huron Cement boats is a red rectangle with a black border and block letters with the initials " L I T with the "I" larger then the other two letters. The initials represent the abbreviation for Inland Lakes Transportation. *** Fresh from a $500,000 facelift in Hamilton, which included the lining of her holds with Teflon, the JAMES NORRIS has begun transporting stone from Colborne, east of Cobourg, to the St. Lawrence cement plant in Mississauga. *** The ALVIN CLARK was officially sold April 6 by the Mystery Ship Preservation Society, Inc., to Group Investors Diversified for $92,500. The new owners, who operate a charter fishing service from the site of the CLARK, have not revealed any plans for the historic schooner. *** The first Seaway grounding occurred April 12 when the FEDERAL SEAWAY suffered steering gear failure and went aground near Delta 55 below St. Zotique. She was assisted off by the tug ROBINSON BAY. ***In late April, the 1908- built tug MOUNT MCKAY departed the government slip in Sarnia and returned to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, arriving April 27. In sold MOUNT MCKAY to Windsor interests, who thereafter encountered financial difficulties which have finally been resolved, and the MOUNT MCKAY has reverted back to Purvis Marine. *** At the Soo, PILOT BOAT VI has been renamed MISS DOLLY and, along with the other pilot boat SOO RIVER BELLE, has been painted in Wellington Towing colors. ** Entering the drydock at Port Weller in Paes was CSL's PRAIRIE HARVEST, which will underg3 repairs for extensive bottom damage. A scene from the past appeared in Thunder Bay Harbor on May 13 when A. B. McLean's WILFRED M. COHEN arrived towing a raft of 9,000 cords of wood. The COHEN began towing the raft May 10 from Buchanan Forest Products woodland operations near Marathon, Ontario. Once the COHEN arrived in Thunder Bay, she picked up the barge MCALLISTER 132 laden with 5,440 tons of lumber bound for Windsor. If this log-haul operation proves feasible, the same routine may be repeated once a month. *** On May 15, due to temporary engine problems of the J.W. WESTCOTT II, the yacht HELENE met the ZIEMIA ZAMOJSKA and performed her pilot change. The HELENE, built in 1927 in Bay City, will be chartered by our Society on Saturday, September 12. Details will follow in future HISTORIANS. In other news from the foot of 24th Street, the J.W. WESTCOTT II, with Captain Bob Handyside and deckhand Ron Seymour aboard, successfully rescued three pleasure boaters whose boat capsized in the Detroit River under the Ambassador Bridge. *** U.S. Navy frigate USS STARK, attacked in the Persian Gulf May 17 with the loss of 37 lives, was a visitor to the Lakes in 1985, docking during the 1985 Freedom Festival in Windsor's Dieppe Park. Volume 39, Issue 2 of the HISTORIAN features a photograph of the STARK in the Upper St. Marys River on July 22, 1985. *** The PRESQUE ISLE departed her home dock the Litton Shipyard at Erie Pennsylvania on May 20 bound for Two Harbors. This is the last time Litton Shipyard will see the PRESQUE ISLE, as the City of Erie has received a $4 million federal grant for bayfront development to begin in July, 1987. The shipyard will be converted into condos and a marina. *** The Great Tugboat Race on the St. Mary's River is scheduled to begin at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 4 at the Soo. A parade through both the U.S. and Canadian Locks featuring many of the entries in the race will be held on Friday, July 3 at 6:30 P.M. *** Recent fit-outs include the KINSMAN INDEPENDENT which departed Buffalo May 16 and passed Detroit upbound on May 17. The MYRON C. TAYLOR is also out, departing her lay-up berth in Rogers City and passing Detroit downbound on May 20. *** In other news, Columbia's RESERVE, idle in Toledo since December 26, 1983, fitted out and passed Detroit on May 6. She was bound for Fraser Shipyards where she will be drydocked.
