The tows were bound for Quebec City, where both vessels will be readied for scrapping overseas. *** e U.S. Coast Guard's newest medium endurance cutter, WMEC 907 ESCANABA, passed Detroit upbound on August 23 on her way to Escanaba Michigan for christening. *** Recently undergoing trials at Peterson Builders of Sturgeon Bay is the MCM-1 AVENGER, the lead ship of the “Avenger Class" Mine Countermeasure Program. MCM-1 AVENGER (224 x 11.3 x 38.11; 1,250 gross tons) is the Navy's largest wooden-hulled ship. Her sisterships, MCM-3 SENTRY and MCM-5 GUARDIAN, are currently under construction at Peterson Builders. *** The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have donated their small tug OSPREY to the Whitefish Point Museum. She is now registered as MC 4807 NG. *** From "Marine News" comes these items regarding the fate of former lakers; PHILIP D. BLOCK and W.W. HOLLOWAY were sold to Siderurgica Aco Norta S.A. and scrapping was begun at Recife Brazil on the HOLLOWAY in October 1986 and the BLOCK in November 1986. PAUL H. CARNAHAN was sold to Shiong Yek Steel Corporation and scrapping was begun on December 18, 1986 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. U.S. 266029 a.) WILLIAM CLAY FORD arrived at Port Maitland for scrapping on December 8, 1986. A.H. FERBERT was sold to Marine Salvage of Port Colborne in April 1987. ARTHUR B. Wheeler Company of W. Bay City, Michigan, was deeded to the museum. In August, she will be moved next to Erie Marine Inc. at the south end of the old elevator slip in Erie Pennsylvania and her weather decks and forecastle will be opened to visitors.
