BOLAND & CORNELIUS UPDATE from 1957 to Present Part IV The boats listed up to ADAM E. CORNELIUS (U.S. 278853) were with American Steamship as listed in the 1957 Supplement, Volume Two of the Marine Historian. The CORNELIUS was the "(new self- unloader) - to be laid down at Manitowoc, Autumn of 1957." Beginning in this issue vessels purchased and new construction are listed. In 1961 Boland and Cornelius bought two vessels from the Pioneer Steamship Co., the J.S. ASHLEY and the DAVID P. THOMPSON. In 1964 they purchased the JOHN T. Steel bulk freighter (U.S. 212354) built in 1914 at Ashtabula, Ohio by Great Lakes Engineering Works (Hull #134). 504 x 54 x 30; 6,311 gross tons. Converted to a crane ship at Lorain,Ohio in q 1956. Purchased by American Steamship Co. in 1957. New forebody built by Maryland Drydock Co., Baltimore, Maryland and attached there. Towed up the Mississippi River to the Lakes. Self-unloading | equipment installed at Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Entered service in 1957 as b.) JOSEPH S. YOUNG. New dimensions 589 x 68 x 39; 12,579 gross tons. Lengthened to 656 feet at South Chicago, Illinois in 1966. Renamed c.) H. LEE WHITE in 1970, and d.) SHARON in 1974. Idle at Monroe, Michigan from 1981 until sold for scrap in 1986. She departed Quebec City July 16, 1986 in route to Brownsville, Texas for scrapping. 2
