Pete Worden, Editor 42072 Sunnydale Lane Northville, MI 48167 To add to our report on the VACATIONLAND in the January "Historian", she sank at 10:40 on December 3 when her bow doors broke open after breaking away from a Japanese tug in 38-foot seas. *** The schooner VICTORY CHIMES arrived at St. Michaels, Maryland on October 24, successfully completing her thirty-three day trip from Duluth. iaiuiol Interlake's MESABI MINER arrived at Stelco's Nanticoke plant in late October to determine if it was possible for a vessel of her size to dock there. *** McKeil's W. N. TWOLAN and GLENSIDE arrived at Lauzon on November 7 with A. H. FERBERT *** Dave Glick reports that as of November 18, Roen Salvage was scrapping their 1914-built tug ARROW at their Sturgeon Bay yard. *** The former Halco tanker HUDSON TRANSPORT has _ been renamed b) SCURRY and, as reported in the December "Historian", is owned by M. Donofrio of Toronto who will operate her as a barge for Bocadon Marine Transportation Inc. On November 25, SCURRY was towed to Port Weller by Wakeham & Son's R & L NO. 1 and PRINCESS NO. 1, where she was drydocked. She departed the drydock on December 3 under tow of MckKeil's GLENEVIS and STORMONT and was at the Shell Oil Dock in Sarnia with the same tugs on December 6. *** On December 2, MckKeil's W. N. TWOLAN and GLENBROOK, along with Purvis Marine's AVENGER IV, arrived at the Welland Dock with ULS's CANADIAN PIONEER. A crew from Port Weller repaired damages to the vessels electrical system suffered in a major engineroom fire which occurred on November 30 in Nanticoke. After repairs were completed, the CANADIAN PIONEER departed on December 16, proceeded downbound, and arrived at Sorel on December 18. She left Sorel on December 21 after being renamed PIONEER and reflagged to Vanuatu registry, bound for Savannah. *** On December 3, the tug CAPT. IOANNIS S. left Lauzon with SAMUEL MATHER and A. H. FERBERT under tow bound for Nova Scotia and eventual overseas scrapping. *** On December 6, the PELEE ISLANDER’ was upbound in the Welland Canal bound for Port Weller and drydocking.
