The first commercial vessel downbound was McKeil's tug WN TWOLAN, clearing the St. Lambert Lock on March 29, bound for Montreal. *** The traditional top hat was awarded to Captain Andy Langlois of the CAPT HENRY JACKMAN at ceremonies on March 29 marking the 1988 opening of the Welland Canal. *** On March 29, Misener's DAVID K. GARDINER (ex LAWRENCECLIFFE HALL) departed Prescott, where she had been wintering, bound for Thunder Bay. *** STAR OF DETROIT arrived in Detroit on March 29 from her winter lay-up berth in Port Lambton. *** On March 30, ULS's CANADIAN PROGRESS was honored as the first freshwater vessel to pass through the Eisenhower Lock. Captain Percy J. Garrick and Chief Engineer Lloyd Burton, along with the rest of the crew, were honored in ceremonies hosted by the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. *** During the month of April, Erie Sand and Gravel will celebrate its 100th year of Operation. *** On April 5, more than 100 residents of Mackinac Island rode the first ferry of the Spring, Arnold Transit's HURON, to the mainland. HURON, skippered by Joe Kompski, will make four round trips a week until May 25, when she resumes her summer schedule of running seven days a week. *** CSL's BLACK BAY went aground in the Brockville Narrows on April 5 after losing steering. Westcott Company. *** On April 13, G A BOECKLING arrived at Merce Shipyard in Toledo after being towed from Sandusky by Gaelic Towing's WM A WHITNEY. She was finally freed around noon the next day after repeated efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard's buoy tender MARIPOSA, based in Detroit. *** On April 18, American Steamship's ADAME CORNELIUS was towed from the Lakefront dock in Toledo by Gaelic Towing's GALWAY BAY and PATRICIA HOEY and placed on the drydock at Merce Shipyards. On April 20, she was towed from the shipyard and returned to the Lakefront docks. The CORNELIUS has been idle in Toledo since December 24, 1985. *** American Steamship's JOHN T. HUTCHINSON arrived at Port Colborne on April 20 under tow of McKeil's WN TWOLAN. She was assisted in the Canal by GLENSIDE. *** VISTA STAR, a 350-passenger, 91-foot cruise ship built in Freeport, Florida by Freeport Shipbuilding Company has been purchased by Duluth- Superior Excursions. She arrived at the Soo on April 22 on her way to Duluth where she will be used for dinner cruises. *** Columbia's JOSEPH H FRANTZ was upbound past Detroit on April 29 on her first trip since laying up in Toledo on December 17, 1986. *** Paterson's KINGDOC (C. 313970) is now fitting out in Sorel as NORTH STAR, registered in Bermuda.
