OLDS was downbound past Detroit on June 2 under tow of McAllister Towing's SALVAGE MONARCH with Gaelic Tugboat Company's SHANNON = assisting. After transiting the Welland Canal on June 4, SALVAGE MONARCH turned over the tow to HELEN M. MC ALLISTER and returned to Duluth. On June 21, BENJAMIN F. FAIRLESS was downbound past Detroit under tow of SALVAGE MONARCH with SHANNON again assisting. IRVING S. OLDS had been idle in Duluth since December 3, 1981, and BENJAMIN F. FAIRLESS was idle in Duluth since October 4, 1982. *** On June 15, Algoma's ALGOWEST was downbound in the St. Lawrence River near the port of Les Escoumins (northeast of Quebec City) when, during near zero visibility due to heavy fog, she collided with the Canadian coaster COUDRES DE L'ILE, loaded with scrap iron. COUDRES DE I'ILE sank in a matter of minutes and the crew of ALGOWEST quickly pulled nine crew members out of the frigid waters. One crew member, however, was still missing. ALGOWEST suffered minor damage and continued her trip on June 22, delivering a load of grain to Baie Comeau. *** AQUARAMA, idle in Muskegon since 1963, will be open for tours during the June 25 through July 4 running of Muskegon's Great Lumbertown Music Festival. Purchased in 1987 by Canadian businessman James Everatt, AQUARAMA is expected to be towed from Muskegon to Port Stanley, Ontario this summer where she will be converted into a floating hotel and convention center. *** The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a variance which would allow the Great Lakes Historical Society to place WILLIAM G. MATHER on the east face of Cleveland's East Ninth Street Pier. The MATHER's stack will project into the flight path of the Burke Lakefront Airport runway by about nine feet. FERBERT and SAMUEL MATHER to Equipment Parts Export, Inc., of New York City for scrapping in Turkey. *** The "Sault Evening News" reports that a U.S. marshall has seized both the unfinished tug and barge built by Eugene Fischer and Kay Bell, partners in the Ontonagon Barge Line Inc. The tug was seized in Houghton, where it has been moored for several months, and the barge in Ontonagon. The tug and barge were seized in conjunction with indictment charging several of the tug and barge system's owners with using barges to smuggle marijuana into the United States from South America.
