Society President Ed Schwartz, right, presents annual "Historian of the Year" plaque to Jay Bascom at April 23rd ceremonies at St. Clair Inn. BASCOM NAMED HISTORIAN OF THE YEAR At the Society's Annual Dinner Meeting held at the St. Clair Inn, St. Clair, Michigan on April 23rd, it was announced that Jay N. Bascom of Toronto had been selected as the 1988 "Great Lakes Historian of the Year." It was twenty years ago this summer that the Society's Advisory Council created this prestigious award designed to recognize those persons who have made significant contributions to research and writings of Great Lakes marine history. A listing of honorees is shown below. Jay Bascom is the fourth Canadian to receive this award. Since the formation of the Toronto Marine Historical Society in 1968, Jay has served as a member of its Executive Committee and for 19 of those 20 years has been Editor of the group's outstanding publication, "The Scanner." Under Jay's guidance, "The Scanner" has become the leading journal of it's type in the Great Lakes community. The publication's meticulous coverage of current events and feature articles covering scores of individual vessel histories has set extraordinarily high standards. "The Scanner" has become an indespensible reference for those persons seriously interested in the Great Lakes marine scene. Jay Bascom's selection as the 1988 "Historian of the Year" accurately reflects the purpose of this award. The Society is most pleased to add his name to this roster in recognition of his important contributions. THE MARINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF DETROIT - HISTORIANS OF THE YEAR 1969 William A.
