Westcott Company. *** The Sault Evening News reports that the unfinished tug built by the defunct Upper Peninsula Shipbuilding Company (UPSCO) will become the property of Marine Specialty Co. of Friendswood, Texas. The tug was moved to the Carbide dock at the Soo from its former berth in Houghton by Wellington Towing's CHIPPEWA last fall, while the U.S. District Court in Southern Illinois advertised the seized tug for sale. The tug was seized by the court as assets used in an illegal drug laundering scheme. Marine Specialty's bid was the highest of 13 received by the federal court. The tug, a drydock and an unfinished barge (currently at Ontonagon) were the only products produced by UPSCO, which was formed to build them as a rail ferry for the State of Michigan. The state ultimately pumped $44 million into the venture before UPSCO declared bankruptcy. *** Scrapping was begun last fall at Manitowoc, Wisconsin on the 1943-built cement carrier BADGER STATE. BADGER STATE (US. 251442) was built as a tanker for the War Shipping Administration and launched as SPINDLETOP. Renamed b.) LAKE CHARLES in 1947, converted: to a cement carrier in 1962 and renamed c.) ATLAS TRAVELLER. Renamed d.) LOC BAY in 1977 and e.) BADGER STATE in 1980. She was towed from Erie to Ferrysburg in 1983 where she remained as a cement storage barge until moved to Manitowoc in 1988. *** CHIEF WAWATAM, purchased by Purvis Marine of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has been cut down to her top deck with only a small section of her cabins remaining forward. A notch in her stern has also been cut in preparation for her use as a barge. *** While fitting out equipment for the start of operations at the Michigan Limestone quarry at Cedarville, an owl nest was discovered. Mick Gillotte of Sault Ste. Marie, an employee of the quarry, made arrangements with Ann Trissel of the Soo to care for the eggs. Mick removed the eggs and drove them up to the Soo for incubation and hopefully hatching. Mick is the son-in-law of our member Captain John Wellington. *** The US. Coast Guard has announced that beginning on March 27 and continuing until December 15, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey vessel PAJ, derrick barge HURON, cranebarge MICHIGAN, and other survey vessels will be conducting obstruction removal and survey operations in the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, Detroit River, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie.
