ALEXANDER MEAKIN HONORED AS 1989 GREAT LAKES HISTORIAN OF THE YEAR Continuing a long tradition, our Society held it's 45th Annual Dinner gathering at the lovely St. Clair inn on the St. Clair River on Saturday April 22nd. Eighty Society members and their families joined in honoring Dr. Alexander C. Meakin of Parma Heights, Ohio with our organization's 21st “Great Lakes Historian of the Year” award. Dr. Meakin currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Great Lakes Historical Society of Vermilion, Ohio. Besides his continuing involvement as one of the Lakes’ foremost marine figures, Dr. Meakin has distinguished himself as author of two outstanding literary efforts; “The Story of The Great Lakes Towing Company”, published in 1984, and his recently published “Master of The Inland Seas”, the story of Captain Thomas Wilson and the Wilson Transit Company. During the ceremonies, Fr. Peter Vander Linden presented Dr. Meakin with the Society's check in support of the restoration project now underway of the former Cleveland Cliff's steamer WILLIAM G. MATHER, that effort being sponsored by The Great Lakes Historical Society. Another highlight of our Annual Dinner Meeting was the award to Fr. Vander Linden of a Harvey Nissley commissioned model of the 1896-built steamer VANDOC, presented in recognition of Fr. Pete’s contributions to our Society as Editor of our monthly Histerian and both volumes of our award-winning “Great Lakes Ships We Remember”. The meeting concluded with Society-member Andy LaBorde of Milwaukee who provided us with a slide presentation of a 1987 trip aboard Huron Cement’s steamer S. T. CRAPO from Alpena to St. Joseph, Michigan and Waukegan, Minois. Andy's camera magic was much in evidence in his program of fascinating views of the vessel's pilot house, cabins, and engine room coupled with many day and night scenes of the CRAPO’s main deck loading and unloading systems. We are indebted to Andy for this display of his photographic talents. For those who are interested, we have reserved the St. Clair inn on April 21, 1990 for our 46th Annual Dinner Meeting.
