4 w t ly THE LOG The Lake Carriers Association reports that May shipments of iron ore, coal, and stone on the Great Lakes totaled 16.3 million tons, the strongest May performance since 1984. The remaining schedule for the USS BOULDER includes Sarnia, August 4-6; Toledo, August 10-14; Lorain, August 15-18; Erie, August 19-23; Port Colborne, August 23-24; Oswego, August 25-28; and Halifax, September 1-5. *** On June 21, fire heavily damaged the 60-year-old G A BOECKLING in Toledo, casting doubts on whether work to restore the vessel will continue. All the wood has been destroyed except for some bulkheads in the crew quarter. The main deck was buckled from the heat, and it is assumed that some hull damage occurred, also from the heat. Lee Baumeister, chairman of the “Friends of the BOECKLING™, said it is still too early to tell whether the BOECKLING is restorable. *** On June 24, Great Lakes Towing’s tugs OHIO and DELAWARE with the former passenger vessel NORMAC were upbound in the Welland Canal bound for Cleveland. Built in 1902 as the fire tug JAMES R ELLIOTT, NORMAC has been in service as a ice breaker, passenger and package freighter, and finally as a floating restaurant in Toronto. John Letnick, her Current owner, plans to open her as a floating restaurant in Cleveland in early August. *** The recently purchased Ontario Northland ferry ONTARIO NO 1 has been renamed NINDAWAYMA, an Ojibway Indian word meaning “Little Sister.” NINDAWAYMA entered service on June 28 and will make two round trips daily from Tobermory to South Baymouth. **% he U. House of Representatives voted on June 28 to approve a massive federal spending bill that will free money for a study on traffic conditions on the Cuyahoga River, the first step toward federally funded improvements to Cleveland Harbor. *¥** Algoma Central's ALGOGULF arrived at Dock #10 in the Welland Canal on June 29 where she will be prepared by Herb Fraser & Associates for her upcoming conversion to a self-untoader at Port Weller. *** Effective July 1, the Michigan-Wisconsin Transportation Company is on its own, six years after the Company signed an agreement with Chessie System that permitted rail and passenger service to continue to Kewaunee. Although Glen Bowden, president of M-W-T, owns the Carferries BADGER, SPARTAN, and CITY OF MIDLAND, he does not own any of the property, docks, or support buildings. It is for these facilities that Bowden and CSX are negotiating a lease. While negotiations are in progress, BADGER is operating on it's regular summer schedule, leaving Ludington at 9:30 AM and 9:30 PM seven days a week. *** The annual International Freedom Festival Tugboat Race was held on July 1 in the Detroit River with Gaelic Tugboat Company's SHANNON the overall winner, defending her title from last year. *** The Great Tugboat Race was held on July 1 at Sault Ste Marie with Wellington Towing's IROQUOIS the surprise winner in the over-500 horsepower class, outpacing Purvis Marine's AVENGER I¥ and ANGLIAN LADY. Other winners included Ferroclad Fisheries LAST TIME in both the 200-500 and Fish Tug classes, NANCY K in the under 200 class, and W D MCCOSH in the Gator (flat-bottom) class. 42-12-5
