“\ THE LOG Last winter, Socanav, Inc. purchased NEW ORLEANS, a British-flag bitumen carrier, from Orleans Shipping Company Ltd. of the Cayman Islands. Arriving in Montreal on May 31, she was renamed NANCY ORR GAUCHER and her port of registry was changed to Montreal. NANCY ORR GAUCHER was built in 1967 by Lodose Vary AB at Ladose, Sweden for Lars Johansson as LANA. She was later sold to 0. T. Rederierna, then A. B. Shipinvest, and in 1988, sold to Orleans Shipping and renamed NEW ORLEANS. *** KANGUK, whose normal Operating territory is the High Artic, visited the Lakes in June. Her name is an Inuit (Eskimo) word meaning goose. Her black stack carries a white goose insignia. On her return trip through the Seaway, KANGUK = KANGUK Detroit River stopped at Montreal to load for the Artic. Plans are for her to return to the Lakes this fall after the Artic season is over. *** The new Washington Island ferry WASHINGTON was christened on June 24. Her dimensions are 100 x 37 x 9 and she will accommodate 24 autos and over 200 passengers. Named after the sail schooner GEORGE WASHINGTON, which anchored at the Island's protected northern harbor in 1616, the new ferry was placed in service in time for Door County's busy summer tourism season. WASHINGTON was designed by Tim Graul Marine Design and built by Peterson Builders. *** Conversion of the former Boland & Cornelius self-unloader ADAM E CORNELIUS to a self-unloading barge was completed in June by Halifax Dartmouth Industries Ltd. of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Owned by Keybulk Transportation Inc. of Montreal, she was renamed CAPT EDWARD Y SMITH. With the notching of her stern, her length was reduced to 595 feet. CAPT EDWARD V SMITH arrived at Rimouski with a cargo of road salt loaded at Pugwash, Nova Scotia.
