LAKES SHIPPING COMPANY On March 13, 1989, the Ford Motor Company's subsidiary Rouge Steel announced it would sell it's 66 year old marine operations, begun by company founder Henry Ford. The sale ended an era in Great Lakes Shipping. The purchaser was the newly-formed Lakes Shipping Company, a subsidiary of Interlake Steamship Company of Cleveland. Future delivery of iron ore, limestone, and coal to the Rouge Steel Operations in Dearborn was also awarded to Lakes Shipping. With this issue, the Marine Historical Society LEE A TREGURTHA Maiden Voyage, Soo Locks of Detroit highlights the Lakes Shipping | Company. In subsequent issues, we will Chronicle the history of Ford Motor Company's marine operations, including the huge scrapping operation of the surplus World War | lakers. We will conclude with a final update of the Ford Motor Company's fleet list, a list that was first featured in Volume 11, Issues 1 and 2 of the Historian.
