The Panamanian-flag tug DALMAR SERVANT located SIR JAMES DUNN 300 miles southwest of Pointa Delgada, took her under tow, and returned to join GEORGIAN BAY. *** On October 3, ENERCHEM ASPHALT departed Montreal bound for St. Romuald near Quebec City on her first trip since her August 24 engine room fire. *** The U. S. Coast Guard cutter MACKINAW departed Cheboygan on October 8 bound for Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay. Once she arrives, she will be placed on the drydock for work which will include repairs to the starboard shaft and five of the six main diesel generators. Repairs are estimated to cost $1.1 million. *** On October 12, while the mailboat J. W. WESTCOTT Il was undergoing emergency repairs, the 1927-built yacht HELENE was chartered to transfer mail and deliver pilots to vessels passing Detroit. *** On October 15, NANCY ORR GAUCHER cleared Sorel after extensive repairs by Socanav’s own yard on the Richelieu River. Her destination was Bronte, Ontario. *** The remains of the cement carrier ROBERT KOCH departed Contrecoeur on October 16 under tow of the tug MANIC bound for Three Rivers, where final scrapping operations will be completed in the St. Maurice River. On October 17, McAllister’s tug PATRICIA B. MCALLISTER returned to Montreal after her hull-strengthening was completed at Pictou, Nova Scotia. *** Upbound past Detroit on October 22 was the former Tin Stacker LEON FRASER, under tow of Malcolm Marine's TUG MALCOLM and Great Lakes Towing’s SUPERIOR. With assistance from Wellington Towing’s CHIPPEWA, she transited the Soo Locks on October 25 and arrived at Fraser Shipyard in Duluth on October 27. Reports indicate that the FRASER is to be converted to a cement carrier for Inland Lakes Transportation, operators of the Huron Cement fleet. *** ULS's CANADIAN PROGRESS is scheduled to be repowered this winter in Sarnia by Sandrin Brothers. Her engines, gearbox, and engine shaft generators will all be replaced. The repowering became necessary due to the unavailability of parts from the original engines builder, Ruston Hornsby. Plans are to install two new Caterpillar diesels, similar to the engine installed in the GEORGE A. SLOAN. *%% In other news from Sarnia, Harbormaster Ken Armitage says fourteen or fifteen ships are expected to winter in Sarnia, filling the harbor to capacity. *** The former Dunbar & Sullivan dipper dredge OMADHAUN and drill boat HASSETT have been purchased by Marine Salvage Ltd. of Port Colborne for scrapping at Ramey’s Bend. MEMBERS* UPDATE Thanks to member Skip Gillham, we have the following update on KING COAL, featured in Volume 42, Number 10 of the H/STORIAN as part of the Erie Sand & Gravel article. “KING COAL was sold to Marine Salvage of Port Colborne for scrap in 1970. However, on September 14, 1970, she sank in heavy seas west of Fairport, less than one mile offshore in thirty-six feet of water. At the time, KING COAL was under tow of HERBERT A and in tandem with the scow AFT.” Captain Charles Tully writes to update us on KANGUK and ENERCHEM ASPHALT, both featured in Volume 43, Number 1. “ENERCHEM ASPHALT was renamed in 1986 and brought into Canadian registry in early 1989. Also, KANGUK visited the upper lakes earlier this year. She was up the Welland Canal on April Sth and back down on the 15th.
