S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted the Lake Carriers’ request to open the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on March 21. The Association's request was based on the need for U. S. flag vessels to move 750,000 tons of iron ore and coal before April 1, the traditional opening date for the locks. Ice conditions on the Lakes are near normal for this time of year. With the U. S. Coast Guard icebreaker MACKINAW back in service, vessels are expected to proceed on schedule. Dry bulk shipping on the lower lakes resumed on March 3 when Inland Lakes Transportation's £. M. FORD departed Milwaukee and sailed to Alpena to load cement destined for Cleveland. According to early forecasts, U. S. flag Great Lakes fleets plan to operate 65 of their 69 vessels in 1990.
