EVEREST and proceeded to take a full load of corn off the BEECHGLEN. The remainder of the corm cargo was unloaded directly from the BEECHGLEN into the Cardinal elevator. P & H officials are expected to make a decision soon on the fate of the steamer. *** On May 10, Socanav's 350-foot tanker EASTERN SHELL ran aground while approaching Parry Sound harbor in Georgian Bay. Four tanks ruptured, allowing approximately 53,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel to spill into Georgian Bay. Fortunately, the Canadian Coast Guard's BARTLETT was in the area at the time of the grounding and arrived within 30 minutes to help in deploying booms which trapped most of *) the spill. Cleanup crews were able to skim off almost all of the spill and place it into portable tanks and barrels. No long-term effect to the environment was expected as a result of the accident. *** The first Russian salty to visit Ludington in eleven years arrived May 13. NOVO POLO TSK arrived from Lenigrad and loaded bulk and bagged magnesite bound for Holland and Germany. *** On May 14, the Yugoslavian-flag salty MALINSKA ran aground in Lake Ontario south of Kingston, Ontario while en route to Sorel from Hamilton. Crews were to begin transferring steel coils so MALINSKA could be refloated and towed to a shipyard for repairs. *** Construction of a new $26 million ferry for Pelee Island was scheduled to begin June 1, officials at Port Weller Dry Docks recently announced. The ferry will be a roll-on, roll-off car and passenger vessel which will service Lake Erie from Kingsville to Leamington on the Ontario mainland to Pelee Island and from Pelee Island to Sandusky Ohio. The 207-foot ferry will be powered by two 1,400 HP engines and will Carry 400 passengers and 40 cars, or 25 cars and two tractor trailers. The new ferry will replace PELEE ISLANDER which will, in turn, replace the much smaller UPPER CANADA.
