Ontario Cement Company. *** On June 15 keel laying ceremonies were held at the MIL Davie Shipyard in Quebec for the Canadian Navy patrol frigate CPF-06 to be named HMCS CALGARY. She is the third in a series of frigates being built by MIL Davie as part of a $10 billion project to upgrade the Canadian navy. On June 26 HMCS HALIFAX, the first of the 12 frigates being built for the project, was Officially turned over to the Canadian Navy by Saint John Shipbuilding. HMCS HALIFAX, which will have a crew of 225, is the Canadian navy's first warship built in eighteen years. *** On June 22 Purvis Marine's W. |. SCOTT PURVIS was upbound at the Soo with the barge CHIEF WAWATAM bound for Thunder Bay where CHIEF WAWATAM was placed on the drydock at Portship. *** While in the Portship yard in Thunder Bay undergoing repairs following her May 10 grounding in Georgian Bay, Socanavy’s 356-foot tanker EASTERN SHELL a.) W. HAROLD REA was renamed c.) LE CEDRE. She passed Detroit downbound on June 23 on her first trip since being renamed and as of mid-July was idle in Sorel alongside CSL’s WHITEFISH BAY. *** Upbound past Detroit on June 26 was the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (FFG 58) representing the U. S. Navy on their annual Great Lakes cruise. SAMUEL B. ROBERTS was in the news in 1988 when, while escorting a tanker in the Persian Gulf, she struck a Iranian mine and was heavily damaged. *** On June 29 GLADIATOR (MCM 11) was launched at Peterson Builders in Sturgeon Bay. She is the eighth of eleven Mine Countermeasure ships Peterson has already constructed or is in the process of building for the U.S. Navy. **% The Spanish-flag salty MILANOS was upbound near Light 10 in Lake St. Clair on June 30 when she lost her engine. She was towed to the Belle Isle anchorage the next day by Great Lakes Towing’s SUPERIOR and ARIZONA. After considerable deliberation, it was decided to tow the disabled salty to Montreal for further inspection and possible repairs. Malcolm's TUG MALCOLM and McKeil's ARGUE MARTIN took MILANOS under tow on duly 15, departing early evening bound for Montreal. *** On July 1, while en route to Halifax from Thunder Bay, CSL’s HALIFAX went aground off Grondines in the St. Lawrence River. She was refloated the following day with help from the tugs DUGA and SALVAGE MONARCH and proceeded to Quebec City for inspection. Damage was found to be minor, and HALIFAX was back in service in early July. *** On July 1, Blue Water Ferry’s 1951-built ferry DALDEAN celebrated her 40th year of service between Sombra, Ontario and Marine City, Michigan. She arrived in Sombra on July 1, 1951 from Erieau Shipyard, being piloted by Captain Wm. Taylor, formerly master of the NORONIC. During the past 40 years, DALDEAN has made over 1,260,000 cross river trips between Sombra and Marine City. *** On July 11, ENERCHEM AVANCE arrived in Montreal and was reregistered Canadian. In January of this year, she was reflagged Bahamian and operated in overseas service in the interim. *** P&H Shipping’s BEECHGLEN was upbound past Detroit on July 22 after repairs were completed at Port Weller following her hull rupture which occurred April 30 while she was being unloaded at Cardinal, Ontario. *** Marine News, journal of the World Ship Society, reports that Misener's SCOTT MISENER (C.194832) was sold to United States interests and resold to Indian shipbreakers, departing Singapore on September 29, 1990 and arriving in Alang, India prior to October 31, 1990. *** The 1926-built steel passenger vessel AMERICANA, brought to Buffalo in 1986 by Buffalo entrepreneur Robert Tick, is being sold to Florida interests after M & T Bank foreclosed on Tick’s Lake Erie Boat Cruise Corporation. AMERICANA’s first season on the lakes was marred by various groundings which idled her on crucial holiday weekends. Although Lake Erie Boat Cruise Corporation filed for reorganization under bankruptcy laws in 1989, in 1990 AMERICANA enjoyed capacity crowds when ticket prices were reduced to $5.00.
