MARINE NEWS.

Last night about six o'clock the tug Proctor arrived here with the barges Cherokee, Iroquois and London, chartered during the past season by Hall & Co. of Ogdensburg. They will winter here, being of the stock of the K. & M. Forwarding Company.

A number of prominent vessel owners of St. Catharines have presented Mr. William Ellis, Superintendent of the Welland Canal, with a testimonial and letter, thanking him for his civil and obliging conduct during the past season.

The following vessels have stripped and are lying at Brockville: Schrs. Havana, F.J. King, Goshawk, Lem Ellsworth, Florida and Myosotis. Captain Dennis, of the Lem Ellsworth, was disgusted to find that his cargo had fallen short thirty tons, and this, coupled with the length of time necessary to discharge, made him feel anything but good-natured. Both he and the captain of the Goshawk say they will carry no more coal to Brockville at any price.

The K. & M. Forwarding Company's barge Syren, loaded with coal, was stopped at Lachine on Saturday last by ice in the canal. She is now laid up for the winter. Her cargo will be carted to Montreal.
