Agreements Violated - Committee on Exemptions.

Discussing A Breach of By-Law.

When the question of the exemption of the Montreal Transportation Company came up Ald. Eilbeck read two letters:

Kingston, Dec. 16th

Mr. R.J. Eilbeck, Alderman for Cataraqui Ward:

Dear Sir; - In reply to your question this morning, asking if we could do the work that has been done at the Portsmouth marine railway for the Montreal Transportation Company, we do hereby certify that we could and did offer to do the work at tariff rates before the barges left Kingston for Portsmouth. We are, yours truly,

Wm. Lewis & Son.

Kingston, Dec. 22nd

Mr. R.J. Eilbeck, Alderman for Cataraqui Ward:

Dear Sir; - In reply to your question as to whether I could have done any work for the Montreal Transportation Company this year I beg leave to say in reply that I could have done a large amount of work if the company had desired to send the work, and, I might also add at a cheaper rate than it cost the company to do the work on their own premises. I may also inform you that the company went outside of their business in making a rudder for the propeller St. Magnus last summer. I am, sir, respectfully yours,

W. Power.

For an infraction of the agreement a penalty of $2,000 was fixed. It was agreed that the manager of the M.T. Co. and other parties interested be notified to appear before the committee and state their case, the company to show why the repairing could not be done at Kingston instead of at Portsmouth.

An Exhibition of Partiality - M.T. Co. given another extension to remove obstructions in street.
