The photo is looking North and you can see Locks 15 and 16. Lock 15 is on the straightaway going north on the left side of the image (Locks 14, 13, 12 are in the distant background) and Lock 16 is on the right side of the image. The building in the foreground is the Lock Tenders house (also known as the Ball House – the Ball Family owned several properties around there for a period). This house still exists just off Mountain Street.

The industrial factory in the center of the image (with the stack) and the buildings directly to the right and left are part of the Independent Rubber Company. The big white building on the distant right is the Lybster Cotton Mill (structure still standing).

As for the dates, roughly 1856 to 1870.

I have a few cautious comments to add to the very useful comments in the earlier posting:

(1) Although the AREA SHOWN in the photo is today part of St. Catharines, at the time the photo was taken it was part of the independent town or village of Merritton;

(2) About the DATE OF THE PHOTO:

A friend who owns another copy of this photo reports it bears the mark of St. Catharines photographer Wm. Craig. Since Mr. Craig was active in St. Catharines only from 1870 until 1879, this photo was almost certainly taken during that time period.

(3) Was the Ball house a locktender's house? There were a couple of such buildings further east, down very near the banks of the Canal, and another where the Canal crossed today's Glendale Avenue (which would be in the middle distance, far left side of the photo). I thought the Ball house was just a family home. Today its address is 155 Mountain Street
